The Main Differences Between Vibratory Screeners and Tumbler Screeners


Screening is a process that can be found at a number of factories all over the country. Screening machines are used to grade and sort materials into different categories so they can be further refined as the manufacturing process continues. There are two primary categories of screening: dry screening and wet screening. And among the types of screeners available, there are two types that tend to be used the most: vibratory screeners and tumbler screeners. While both are effective, there are a number of differences between the two types of screeners and this article looks at a few of them.

  • Linear vs. Circular: One of the primary differences between vibratory screeners and tumbler screeners is the way they conduct the screening process. Vibratory screeners are linear, shaking their materials down a relatively straight plane. Tumbler screeners, as their name implies, screens materials by tumbling them in an elliptical tumbler. Both are effective means of screening materials, but tumbler screening is considered an improvement on the process overall.
  • Size: Another primary difference between these two types of screeners is their relative size. As crazy as this sounds, a vibratory screener is actually somewhat smaller than a tumbler screener. This is because a vibratory screener is linear and can be built into a relatively compact shape. By contrast, tumbler screeners are round and are going to take up a larger area of space relatively speaking. This is because there’s a certain area of space needed to accompany the tumbling drum, and the larger the drum, the larger the space required.
  • Noise Generated: Another difference between the two types of tumblers is the amount of noise generated. Vibratory screeners, being linear, tend to generate more noise than tumbler screeners. This could be because tumbler screeners, being round, sort their materials through rotation instead of sending the materials rattling down a long metal screen.

In conclusion, vibratory screening and tumbler screening are both effective screening techniques but there are differences between them. One uses linear motion while the other uses circular motion. Also vibratory screeners tend to be smaller than tumbler screeners. And lastly, tumbler screeners generate less noise than vibratory screeners. These are all important differences to be aware of when considering what kind of screener to buy for your factory.
