Help Wounded Veterans Charities with Your Clothing Donations

Purple heart donations

Do you know when to donate clothes to charitable organizations such as The Military Order of the Purple Heart? The response to this may be more simple than you imagine.

When you live in an area that experiences climate change on a regular basis, then chances are that you or your family may not have worn specific items for 6 months or so. If this is the case, it would be a good idea to begin collecting these items for a Purple Heart veterans pick up.

Since children grow so fast, and fashions change, it’s not unusual to have several outfits in drawers and closets that won’t be worn again. Do you tend to put winter or summer clothes in storage? You may want to set aside an hour or so a day to go through these items. In addition to finding clothes, boots, sandals, and various accessories that you would love to wear again, there may also be a few items that can be placed in that veterans clothing donations box.

Were you aware that many people in the United States just throw their old clothing and household linens away? Recent figures show that for the average American, this amount to 70 pounds of clothing, linens, and other textiles on an annual basis. Since many of these items could be worn again, used for other purposes, or recycled, donating is a more sustainable and environmentally-conscious choice.

Every year, however, around 4.7 billion pounds of clothing are being donated. It’s important to note that 45% of second-hand clothing is worn again, and nearly 100% of household textiles and clothing is recyclable. This is regardless of the quality or condition of the fabric. Buttons, for example, are easily replaced. Hem, seams, and simple tears can also be mended so these items are wearable.

When you collect clothing and other household textiles for donation, you can drop them off at a variety of convenient locations. GreenDrop has around 30 free-standing locations, and they also have mobile trailers that can pick up your donations.

You may be interested to know that every week, GreenDrop collects an average of 100 tons of donations. This includes used clothes, household goods, and electronics. As a result, these items don’t end up in United States’ landfills and most can be repaired and used again.

If you’re not sure when to donate clothes, just place them in the donation box. Wounded veterans charities will be able to determine what can be reused or recycled. Do you tend to share on social media sites? You can encourage your friends by letting them know when to donate clothes as well.
