Labeling Food Products Could be a Matter of Life or Death

On any container, the label is what makes the sale. Of course, the taste of an Oreo or Twinkie speaks for itself, but there is certainly something to be said about the familiar colors and text.

Companies spend thousands of dollars creating high quality images on roll-fed labels, pressure sensitive labels, and heat shrink sleeves for bottles and other containers in order to attract customers.

While the striking images and poignant text are a definite sell for customers, buyers are often more concerned with the nutrition facts on the back of a food product. Customers often turn a drink or cake box around to check the calorie, fat, or sugar content before purchasing it.

The reason for this is that many Americans are becoming increasingly health conscious.

One of the benefits of creating food labels with nutrition facts is that customers will know exactly what they are ingesting. All ingredients used in the process of manufacturing the item must be listed, as well as the appropriate dietary details. So, if a customer is looking for a cookie with less fat, or half the calories, he or she should be able to pick up a product and know if the it is the right one.

Also, for people on a special diet, these labels can be critical. According to Statistic Brain, gluten sensitivity affects about 5% to 10% of Americans, and the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness reports that about three million people in the U.S. have Celiac Disease. For these suffers, not only can nutrition labels be helpful, they can save people from medical complications. In addition, the level of sugar or calories in a product could be life-saving for diabetes patients.

So, not only do shrink sleeves for bottles and containers, custom product labels, and commercial labels provide a healthy profit for companies because of their marketability, but they are also an important part of protecting the well-being of the American public.
